The Midnight Queen

Fantasy is one of my favorite genres, so I jumped at the chance to read The Midnight Queen. This is the first book in the Noctis Magicae trilogy by Sylvia Izzo Hunter. The story centers around a student at Merlin College named Gray that is sent on a mission by his professor that goes horribly wrong. Gray is forced to go home with his mentor for the summer to his house where he resides with his three daughters. Even though women are not allowed to study magic, the professor's middle child Sophie has been practicing. Together Sophie and Gray unravel a mystery surrounding Sophie's family and a horrible plot against the king.

I really wanted to enjoy this book. The premise was really promising and the characters or a few of them at least were pretty interesting. I loved the humor that was added by the youngest sister Joanna and the mystery that surrounded Mrs. Wallis. I also enjoyed that there was a bit of love story included with all of the magic. I also really enjoyed the time period of which the story was set. I however had a hard time getting through this book. It seemed to be very slow getting from one part of the action to another. It felt as though there were too many scenes added that made the book a bit tedious to read. That is, parts of the story that did not move it along but rather distracted from the story. I did find the overall story interesting but as I said did find it very difficult to get through.

I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review

Driftwood Bay

Driftwood Bay by Irene Hannon is a sweet and inspirational story. This is part of the Hope Harbor series but is the first one that I have read. I feel that this makes a good stand alone book but found myself becoming curious about the side characters in the story and would love to read the others in the series. Jeannette has created a new life for herself in the town of Hope Harbor. She owns a lavender farm and tea shop and spends most of her time alone. Her quiet world is shaken up when Logan moves in next door. Not only does he have a little girl, but also a trouble making dog that force their worlds to collide. Alongside the story of Jeannette and Logan is a beautiful and heartbreaking story of a family that has escaped persecution in Syria. Everyone in the story has their own heartbreak, but they all come together to create a new life and new relationships. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books from Irene Hannon.

February 2017 Bookish Box Review

I received my February Bookish Box today! The theme this month was galentines day so the box focused on literary friendships. Inside the box were best book friend pins from Jar of Buttons. A mug with a quote from the Raven cycle series from Drop & Give Me Nerdy. A really cute Fangirl nerd necklace from Appraising Pages.  Also, a bookmark with an Anne of Green Gables quote from Lexy Olivia . There has been a bookmark in every box I have received from this shop and they are all beautiful!  My favorite item in the box was the shirt with the quote from The Perks of Being a Wallflower from Appraising Pages. This was my favorite book in high school and I am psyched to have it on a shirt. I will wear it proudly with my nerdy necklace. I really loved all of the items this month. It all fit very well with the theme and included items from some of my favorite books. I have loved all of the boxes that I have received and have yet to be disappointed. The Marc...

Zen Camera

Photography is one of my hobbies so I always jump at the chance to check out new books on the topic. Zen Camera: Creative Awakening With a Daily Practice in Photograph y by David Ulrich uses Zen principles to teach people how to take better photographs. It also teaches an important lesson in today's busy world which is to slow down and take in our surroundings.  Zen Camera is split into six different lessons. My favorite part of these lessons is that at the end of each one is a tip that can be applied or something that the reader should go out and try. I have been interested in photography for quite a while and have read many books on the topic but I felt that this book had a fresh approach to photography.  Zen Camera is good for anyone starting out and using the camera on their phone or for more advanced photographers that are looking for inspiration. The book is full of gorgeous images and practical advice.  I received this book from Blogging for Books for this ...
