A Plain Leaving

I just finished reading A Plain Leaving by Leslie Gould. I had previously only read a couple of books set in and around the Amish community so did not really know what to expect from this book. I really enjoyed this story. I read the majority of it in two sittings because I could not put it down.

Jessica left the Amish community three years ago but has received news of a death in the family that brings her back to her farm. While there, she confronts all of the people that led her to leave as well as the ones that have supported her along the way. Jessica learns about what she really wants out of life through the time spent with her family on the farm. Jessica's aunt also provides a story about an ancestor that was going through similar issues. Through the story of the past and the time spent in the present, Jessica works to figure out if she will stay with her family or go back to the life she has made for herself over the last 3 years.

This story moved at a quick pace and had an interesting story line. I wanted to know more about what had led to Jessica's leaving as well as what she was going to do. I also loved the story that her aunt told about their ancestor's. There was also a bit of a love involved that made this a really beautiful story.

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for my honest review.

Driftwood Bay

Driftwood Bay by Irene Hannon is a sweet and inspirational story. This is part of the Hope Harbor series but is the first one that I have read. I feel that this makes a good stand alone book but found myself becoming curious about the side characters in the story and would love to read the others in the series. Jeannette has created a new life for herself in the town of Hope Harbor. She owns a lavender farm and tea shop and spends most of her time alone. Her quiet world is shaken up when Logan moves in next door. Not only does he have a little girl, but also a trouble making dog that force their worlds to collide. Alongside the story of Jeannette and Logan is a beautiful and heartbreaking story of a family that has escaped persecution in Syria. Everyone in the story has their own heartbreak, but they all come together to create a new life and new relationships. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books from Irene Hannon.

The Light Before Day

The Light Before Day by Suzanne Woods Fisher is the third book in her Nantucket Legacy series. I did not read the first book in the series but I did read the second when it came out earlier this year. While I enjoyed the continuation of characters, I feel that this could be a stand alone novel. When I read book two in the series, I found the language of the book to be a bit of a challenge. I will say that having already once been emerged in this world, I did not find that to be an issue with this book. The author does however include a handy list of definitions if some of the language is tricky. This book follows the twins Hitty and Henry who are now grown and receiving an inheritance from their grandmother that has a few stipulations attached. Along with the story of the characters growing and developing relationships, this book also covers important social issues of the time. This was a part of the book that I really enjoyed. I also liked the inclusion of the ancestors journal wh...

The Book of Greens

I have always loved cookbooks! Seriously, I love to thumb through cookbooks even if I have no intention of cooking. There is something soothing to me about combing through the different recipes. I received an absolutely gorgeous cookbook titled, "The Book of Greens: A Cook' Compendium," by Jenn Louis with Kathleen Squires. The photography in this book is gorgeous. As the title suggests this is a cookbook about all different types of greens. They are very conveniently organized in alphabetical order and with beautiful pictures of the different greens. This is great because honestly, I had not heard of some of these greens before. Celtuce? Thanks to this book I not only know what it looks like but know how to choose it, how to clean it, how it should be stored and some of the different methods to use it in cooking as well as some recipe ideas. Not only are the pictures drool worthy, but the recipes sounds amazing as well. One that I need to try soon is the lettuce an...
